Pinboard and Longevity

"A bookmarking service that has not changed its UI in fifteen years remains profitable and beloved. Longevity is a feature."

The tech industry expects software to constantly redesign itself. We are subjected to regular interface overhauls, feature updates, and rebranding campaigns that change nothing but our muscle memory.

Pinboard, a simple bookmarking site built in 2009, looks almost exactly the same as it did on day one. It is text-heavy, fast, and completely reliable. It does one job and does it perfectly, charging a simple fee.

Because the founder refused the constant redesign loop, the software has remained stable and profitable for over a decade. Consistency is a form of respect for your users. You do not need to change to remain valuable.
