The Speed of Paper

"Paper cannot show you an alert. It cannot invite you to check a feed. It only waits for your pen."

We use digital notes because they are fast, searchable, and backed up in the cloud. But that speed is a double-edged sword. The same device you use to write is also the device that delivers notifications and distractions.

A physical notebook is slow. It forces you to write by hand, which slows down your thinking and encourages selection. Best of all, paper has no internet connection. It cannot interrupt you, show you an ad, or request an upgrade.

Use paper for the messy, raw beginning of your ideas. Let them take shape in a silent medium before you bring them to the screen.
